How Often Should You Get a Massage? (The Science-Backed Answer)
By Aromathai Therapy · 8 June 2026
Stop guessing. Here's what therapists actually recommend based on your specific goals and lifestyle — plus how to know when your body needs attention.
"How often should I come back?" is the question every therapist gets asked at the end of a session.
The honest answer: it depends. But let's break down the actual science and recommendations, so you can make an informed decision based on your situation.
The Research
Studies show that massage provides measurable physiological benefits for 48–72 hours after a session. After that, your muscles gradually revert to their pre-massage state. So if you want to maintain benefits, timing matters.
Massage Frequency by Goal
If Your Goal Is: Stress Relief & General Wellbeing
Recommendation: Once a month
One 60–90 minute massage per month is enough to keep cortisol levels suppressed, maintain better sleep, and provide regular mental breaks. Think of it as preventative healthcare — consistent enough to work, affordable enough to maintain long-term.
If Your Goal Is: Releasing Chronic Tension
Recommendation: Every 2 weeks for 6–8 weeks, then monthly
Chronic tension (the kind that's been building for years) takes time to resolve. A single massage feels good temporarily, but the tension returns because the underlying pattern hasn't changed.
Our protocol: Four sessions over 8 weeks (every 2 weeks), then reassess. Most clients notice real, lasting improvement at this point, and can drop back to monthly maintenance.
If Your Goal Is: Sports Performance & Recovery
Recommendation: Every 1–2 weeks during training blocks
Athletes typically benefit most from massage 1–2 days after hard training. The timing allows metabolic waste to be cleared while preventing DOMS (delayed-onset muscle soreness). During heavy training blocks, weekly or biweekly is ideal. During off-season, monthly maintenance is usually enough.
If You're Recovering From Injury or Addressing Acute Pain
Recommendation: 1–2 times per week for 3–4 weeks
Acute problems benefit from more frequent, shorter sessions. Your therapist will guide you through a specific protocol and tell you when to transition to maintenance.
The Body's Signals (Listen to These)
The true answer to "how often?" comes from your body. Book when you notice:
- Disturbed sleep or poor sleep quality
- Returning muscle tension or pain
- Recurring headaches
- Feeling "stuck" or restricted in movement
- Irritability or mental fog (often linked to physical tension)
- Stiffness after workouts that takes more than 2 days to resolve
