How head massage can help ease tension and stress in the head, neck and shoulders — and what to expect from a session at our Horsforth studio.

Tension in the head, neck and shoulders is something many of us live with daily. Hours at a desk, poor posture, and stress all contribute to that tight, heavy feeling across the back of your head and neck.

Head massage can help ease that tension and leave you feeling clearer, calmer and more relaxed.

Where Tension Builds

Most head and neck tension starts in the neck and shoulders:

  1. You sit at a desk for 8 hours with poor posture
  2. Your neck muscles (particularly the upper trapezius and levator scapulae) tighten as they work to hold your head up against gravity
  3. This tightness creates a band of pressure across the back of your head
  4. You feel a heavy, tight sensation across your head, usually at the back

This is why a neck and head massage often brings a sense of relief — you're easing the source of the tension.

The Specific Muscles Involved

Upper Trapezius — Runs from your neck to your shoulder. Constant tension here contributes to that heavy-headed feeling.

Levator Scapulae — Runs along the side of your neck. When tight, it creates a sense of tightness into the side of the head.

Sternocleidomastoid (SCM) — The prominent neck muscle. Tension here creates pressure across the whole front and sides of the head.

Suboccipital Muscles — The deep muscles at the base of your skull. When these tighten, they create that band-like pressure across the head.

How Head Massage Helps You Relax

When a skilled therapist releases these muscles, several things happen:

1. Muscle Release Muscle tension literally traps nerve endings. Release the muscle, release the nerve. The area feels lighter and more open.

2. Deep Relaxation Gentle work on the neck triggers the vagus nerve, activating deep relaxation and helping you switch off.

3. Restored Range of Motion Tight neck muscles restrict cervical spine movement, perpetuating tension. Releasing them restores normal movement, helping to break the tension cycle.

4. Improved Sense of Wellbeing Many clients report feeling noticeably lighter, clearer and more relaxed after a session.

What to Expect During a Session

A head massage session (60 minutes) focuses on:

  • Your neck, shoulders, and upper back (where tension builds)
  • Your scalp, temples, and forehead (where you feel the tightness)
  • Your jaw and base of skull (often surprisingly tight)

The pressure is firm but never painful. You should feel noticeably lighter and more open-headed by the end.

A Note on Migraines

Tension and migraines are different. If you experience migraines, let your therapist know — massage can be relaxing, but migraine management is different and should be discussed with your GP.
