Thai Massage vs Swedish Massage: Which One Should You Actually Book?
By Aromathai Therapy · 6 June 2026
Confused by the different massage types? We break down Thai vs Swedish massage with a simple decision tree so you can book the right treatment first time.
At Aromathai Therapy, the most common question is: "Which massage should I book?"
The answer is simpler than you'd think. Here's a quick guide to help you decide.
Swedish (Relaxation) Massage: The Spa Experience
You've probably pictured this type before — you're on a massage table, lights are dimmed, soft music plays. Your therapist uses long, flowing strokes with massage oil on your bare skin. The pressure is light to medium, rhythmic, deeply calming.
Best if:
- You want to completely shut off and relax
- You're new to massage and want a gentle introduction
- Your goal is stress relief, not problem-solving
- You want to fall asleep during the treatment
- You have no specific pain areas, just general tension
Drawback: It doesn't address deep structural problems. Tension often returns within a few days.
Traditional Thai Massage: The Active Treatment
You stay fully clothed on a massage bed. Your therapist uses their hands, thumbs, elbows, knees, and feet to apply rhythmic pressure along the body's energy lines, combined with assisted stretching. It's much more dynamic — you're being moved, stretched, and mobilised throughout.
Best if:
- You feel stiff, restricted, or unable to move freely
- You want improved flexibility and range of motion
- You're dealing with chronic tightness (not just general stress)
- You play sports or have an active lifestyle
- You want lasting results, not just temporary relaxation
- You enjoy a more "involved" treatment experience
Drawback: Some people find it too active if they're seeking pure rest. It's harder to fall asleep during Thai massage.
Deep Tissue Massage: The Problem-Solver
Like Swedish massage in setup, but with much firmer pressure, slower strokes, and a focus on specific problem areas (tight neck, sore lower back, etc.). Your therapist targets the deeper layers of muscle where chronic tension lives.
Best if:
- You have specific pain or problem areas
- You're dealing with chronic tension or knots
- You want real, sustained relief
- You're willing to endure some pressure for genuine results
Drawback: Firmer pressure means it's not as "relaxing" as Swedish massage, though most clients find it satisfying rather than uncomfortable.
The Simple Decision Tree
Do you want to completely relax and turn your brain off? → Swedish relaxation massage
Do you feel stiff and restricted? → Thai massage
Do you have specific pain or tension areas? → Deep tissue massage
At Aromathai Therapy, all three are available from £55. Many clients rotate between them based on what their body needs in any given week.
